Vpro Gids cover
Jeroen van Bergeijk profiled me for the Dutch magazine Vpro Gids. The magazine asked me to do the cover illustration (on the subject of blogging) for the issue. Here's what I came up with.
I don't think the article is online. (Decent English translation here.)

Nice art. Abstract enough and well balanced. What is the inspiration? It has a 60's feel to it.
I'm not usually keen on this style, but this is really, really good.
It has more of a 50s feel to me (think tiki barkcloth) than 60s. But it does ring 60s, I guess because the freedom of the shapes is a little too wild for the 50s. It's a 00s reworking of a 60s Jetsons reworking of the 50s original. The background fade is modern, though, and overall it's clearly modern, not 50s or 60s, because it's drawing from too broad a range of ideas than either of those -- something that usually turns me off of this semi-retro style; but this one hits the mark. Nicely done, sir.
This makes me want to draw ... a conclusion: Something about how of course it's a man who does such delightful figurative cartoons who also, naturally, creates an abstraction this lovely. WTG!
I love how it has a slight retro feel to it.
Really cool - love it
Just registered to say this: there is a transcript of the interview online here:

I guess Jeroen is working on an English translation?
Illustrates well the organic, inter-connective nature of blogs.
As each 'icon' is unique on to itself so the groupings become one, not disemilar entity.
Some connect to others, some simply dead-end.
Just like in real life!
Nice work Mark.
As the poor art critic said,"I don't have the Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh..."

I'm a subscriber of VPRO Gids!
But I'm sorry to say I threw this one out with the trash...
Wait... wasn't this done by an elephant?
(sry Mark, couldn't resist ;)
I translated the interview, it's up at http://www.snowstone.com/archives/000446.html.
Nice piece, Mark. That'd make an awesome fabric print. I want pillows with that on it!
Darnit, ignore that final dot:

Nice piece (and nice translation!). By the way, the VPRO gids is a TV guide magazine by a Dutch television network. They also do quite well in making shows available online.
Absolutely wonderful, beautiful cover, Mark! Thanks for posting it.
Wow, Mark, that's your best one yet! When I first saw it I assumed this was another Tim Biskup post!
