Lampshade that knits itself

Nadine Sterk's Sleeping Beauty lamp is on exhibition at a show of design school projects, on display at the Design Huis in Eindhoven, The Netherlands -- it's "a lamp that develops like a living organism: switch it on and it slowly starts growing by knitting its own lampshade at a speed of three rotations per hour." It looks like a giant sock knitting machine.

Sleeping Beauty? More like Rapunzel if you keep it going long enough.

I like the image here. It sort of looks like a rocket engine. This would be even more interesting if after it reached this stage it reversed itself and then kept cycling through. Knitting and then unknitting itself over and over. Perhaps even adding variations to the pattern. That would be cool.

I think it would also be interesting if the light source would cylcle through a variety of colors, smoothly transitioning from purple to pink to blue...

Self-replicating robots are taking over.

Pay no attention to that lampshade in the corner.

SOmeone posted a link to this post on a knitting list of mine; as a result I read it today, March 23, at about 5:15. Thing is, I read it while sitting in a hotel in Eindhoven. Some quick research showed that today is the exhibit's last day, and that the Designhuis, which turned out to be only a short walk from my hotel, closes at 6. So guess whatI spent the next 45 minutes doing?

One of the sexiest things I've ever seen on BB.
