Inverse Square, was that a non-sequitur, sarcasm, or are you really incapable of understanding why this specific post, which is about an item on Search Engine, contains this disclaimer?
I was listening to this very podcast while shopping for groceries yesterday. I often wonder of people see me grinning and/or chuckling for no apparent reason do they:
A)Understand that I am wearing headphones and possibly listening to something funny, or
B)Think that I am functionally insane?
Search Engine is a great podcast. And NO I do not contribute to this show or anything else on CBC. I do live in Canada. I am also to my knowledge not related to any of the mutants. End of disclosure.

Well, on the Joey Chaos ripoff tip- comparing the good-looking alt-rock robot and the chubby Canadian goth, I say: wishful thinking, dogg. We all read William Gibson novels.
Yes Jason Walker, you've nailed it! Clearly the seductive influence of non-profit Canadian public radio has corrupted Cory.
hey Jason; your site links to others that take money. You are already doing what you accuse others of. Further, I looked at your site and it doesn't make me want to stay. BB does. Are you here to carp about what you get for free, make traffic for yourself, appear hypocritical or just annoy? Or all of the above?
I found the first story of the podcast, on Internet addiction, to be interesting too. But I think Jesse (and his producer) mixed up two different meanings of "addiction": 1) the medical meaning, where the body has a physical dependancy on a substance and suffers physical withdrawl symptoms, which internet addiction clearly is not, and 2) the "pop" psychological meaning, where the addiction is psychological, like a gambling or pornography addiction. I think there are a couple of times where the second definition is used, but is misunderstood by Jesse to be the first. The doctor whose trying to get it classified as a mental disorder even says he prefers not to use the term "addition."
Still, it's a great show, and my favorite CBC podcast after the "Ideas: How to Think About Science" podcast. Good stuff, Jesse. (And why am I not surprised you're a BoingBoing reader?)
And great job breaking open the "Joey Chaos" scandal too. :)
Inverse Square, Jason Walker, what's your problem? I've been reading BoingBoing for years, and Cory's been making these sorts of post -- Here's some odd thing some guy just did -- all along. This isn't unusual. What's new is that he's got a relationship with the source. Would you rather he didn't disclose it?
Jeez, sorry. I understand, yeah, but seeing that italicized prologue brought back that twinge I thought had gone away since the second series of the IT crowd finished. Aside from that, it seems a little empty, as though he/you is saying it out of obligation rather than just... "hey guys, maybe you can take this with a teensy weensy bit of salt because I'm paid by these fine fellows :)"
It seems likely that he's trying to encourage others to do the same, which is commendable, but in this way it's a sort of... unwanted social obligation that has been invented here. I have now spent more time agonizing and writing this than I ever would reading the things I'm complaining about, I hope you're all satisfied
hey, they're having a GREAT discussion about this very thing over at the Moderation Policy thread.
/\ Would you call me lazy and confiscate my vowels if I were to ask for a link to this thread? Pretty please?
