Woman artist lipsynchs Kerouac, Ginsberg, Nixon

Adie sez, "I thought you might be interested in a 'Covers' project I've been working on. I lipsynch to audio from the 50s and 60s, all male voices (I'm a woman.) The project is really about pointing at a moment in history, recontextualizing the ideas of that era in contemporary terms. I'm also interested in illusion, how we believe what we see even when we know it's not true."

This is great -- I especially love her as both Richard Nixon and Merv Griffin, holding up both ends of an interview. Link (Thanks, Adie!)

Not to derail or anything, but when exactly did "woman" become an adjective? Would you say "man artist?"

This isn't just here, I've seen and heard this almost everywhere, especially people talking about Hilary Clinton.

Just 'sayin.

Dustin -- the reason her sex is relevant is that she's lipsynching MEN who speak, and the incongruity of this is part of its artistic impact.

If the artwork in question was, for example, wearing a fake maternity pad 24/7 and recording public reaction, and the artist was a man, I would probably headline it, "Man artist wears pregnancy belly."

I think he meant it should be female artist. Grammatically speaking.

I don't have an issue with her beingn called woman vs. female, or any permutation there of. It's this whole "artist" thing that gets me. She's lip syncing!

I can do the same thing to Hillary Clinton's speaches. Or Betty Friedan? Does that make me an "artist"?

Weak.

Yes, "female" is the adjective, if ther person's sex is relevant.

Cory, you also meant Allen GinsbErg.

I think people are missing the point of how funny this is.

It's not an adjective, it's an appositive. Didn't you pay attention to your woman high school English teacher?

Why laugh when you could correct grammar?

wom·an /ˈwʊmən/ [woom-uhn]

–adjective
13. of women; womanly.
14. female: a woman plumber.

And why don't people look things up before they critique other people's usage.

It's not Richard Nixon and "Richard Albert," it's Nixon and Merv Griffin.

The other recording is of Richard Al*P*ert, probably better known to the marginally-educated as Baba Ram Dass.

I vote for "female" over "woman".

OMFG, this is possibly the best thing I have ever read on Boing Boing.

I watched them with my 9 and 11 year old. They laughed at Ginsberg's 'Go Fuck yourself with your atom bomb.'

They got to learn about Ginsberg and Keroauc, and Nixon...and laugh and enjoy the presentation.

Totally freaking brilliant. Wow.

She should absolutely do one to Alan Watts, from whom there is much fantastic audio.
