Jacques Vallée interviewed by Daily Grail

I previously posted that the good folks at Daily Grail republished the classic 1979 fortean book, "Messengers of Deception: UFO Contacts and Cults," by my friend Jacques Vallée. (Jacques is a computer scientist, astrophysicist, UFO researcher, and the basis for the Lacombe character in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. He is also a past president former research director at Institute for the Future, where I am a researcher.) Today, the Daily Grail posted an interview with Jacques where he talks about the work that has made him a "heretic among heretics." From the interview:
Img125 7400 Jacquesvalleeue2 TDG: When we look at ufology in the 1960s, versus today, I'm not sure a lot of progress has been made (perhaps even the opposite). Is ufology a sisyphean endeavour, unworthy of our prolonged attention? You've personally devoted almost 50 years of research and writing to exploring the phenomenon - can you give a simple opinion to the question: what is behind the UFO phenomenon?

Jacques Vallée: You’re asking me two different questions here. I have convinced myself that there was a real UFO phenomenon once the errors, hoaxes and occasional manipulations were screened out. We do know a great deal more today than we did just 10 years ago, thanks to dedicated researchers who have invested their time and resources to documenting the data. That is not as good as a serious scientific research effort, but one should never underestimate what can be achieved by motivated amateurs. This being said, it would be unrealistic to expect quick solutions, in this field as in any other scientific endeavor.

I have also been interested in the nature of consciousness, and that field has not gotten closer to a solution in fifty years either. Similarly, look at some of the lingering enigmas in archaeology, or in medicine: all we can do is document our data and hope someone will make sense of it at a later time.

There are UFOs. That is to say that sometimes there are objects which fly, and sometimes we are unable to identify them. Maybe it's because they were flying quickly, and someone only saw it out of the corner of their eye. Maybe it is because they were looking through an incredibly low resolution camera that was poorly configured.

At the present time there is absolutely no verifiable evidence which suggests that intelligent beings from a planet besides earth are visiting earth, abducting humans, slaughtering livestock, making crop circles, etc. If you really and truly think otherwise, I suggest you seek the help of some sort of doctor.

Why is it no one ever seems to mention that Dr. Vallee was also a Priest in the Church of Satan due to his friendship with Anton LaVey and played a major role in introducing _The Morning of the Magicians_ the English speaking world in the early 1960s?

I agree, people seem to equate Unidentified Flying Object with extraterrestrial craft, and ignore the simple meaning of the words. I believe that the majority of sightings (including the recent Stephenville Texas one) are in fact experimental military craft. Of course the military will deny this; secret tests would not be too secret if they told everybody. The government's vehement denial of extraterrestrials has long been it's strongest defense as such denials only convince believers all the more.

Funny thing is, Jacques doesn't necessarily think they're "nuts and bolts" spacecraft visiting Earth either.

Jacques told me he was friends with LaVey and liked him very much. I don't know that he was a priest in the church though.

Why is it so hard for people, in general, to accept that "intelligent" beings from other solar systems could travel to our planet? Consider the odds - there are (likely) billions of planets in our galaxy alone and of those billions - there must be at least a million where conscious/intelligent life has evolved - some of which have developed technology that would enable them to travel the vast distances between solar systems. *Conversely* - if they are out there why have we not been *definitively* contacted? Are we the un-cool planet of the galaxy? I remember reading some of Vallee's books in the 70s and finding them very credible.

#1. . . "If you really and truly think otherwise, I suggest you seek the help of some sort of doctor."

Aw, c'mon, we all want to believe, deep down inside; you know you do too. Whether we truly believe is not the same thing as wanting to believe. Disabusing my children and grandchildren, early on, one by one, of supernaturalism and superstition I saw as a necessary but sad business.

It's lonely out here among the stars, all alone. Or haven't you felt that yet?

David is right, Jacques doesn't believe there are "nuts and bolts" spacecraft either. But even believing in physical spacecraft isn't crazy. After you remove all the false reports there are still some very well documented sightings that simply have no explanation. But that's all one can say.

Frankly, if I were an alien visiting earth I'd stay far away from the damn monkeys too.

When you read 10, 50 or 1000 files from UFO witnesses, you can thinf easily they are coming from outer-space... When you read 50 000 files, you can think they are coming from other dimensions...

We can't forget that time, space and dimension are probably very linked together... There are physical evidences... it's a fact. But everything could have his origin from the nature of consciousness too...

Secret military craft are a possibility too for a certain pourcentage of sighting. A tiny one

Upon what basis does one make a claim that there are no extraterrestrial intelligently controlled flying vehicles visiting the earth? (Or, by what authority do you conclude that someone who does believe in such things needs medical attention?)

That sounds incredibly arrogant, and reliant on concensus based reality, as in...they can't exist because no authority tells me that they do.

Go back to one of the patron saints of Boing Boing : Robert Anton Wilson, and repeat to yourself the mantra:

Belief is the death of intelligence"

Putting aside the arguable evidence that there have been many extremely weird sitings which can't be simply dismissed as swamp gas or Venus, there is another form of interesting evidence documented in the book "UFOs and the National Security State" which document the Active role of the Government including documented correspondence and testimony to discredit the idea of UFOs in the public mind.

So, before you declare authoritative belief in something, you'd best be sure of yourself that you gathered some facts, and did some honest thinking, rather than relying on what you heard some talking head tell you on TV.

The world is weirder than you think.

It's not hard to accept that they *could* - it's hard to accept that they *have*.

You are leaving out a rather large amount of witness testimony to crafts and beings up close ('Close Encounter' of the XX Kind). Dr Vallee has spent decades researching this.

It is very easy to mischaracterise this topic in the manner you have. Yes, there are a lot of people seeing simple things (Moons, stars, planes etc) and making mistakes. There are also a lot of people who are - to put it bluntly - deluded. But there is a core to the UFO topic which is not explained away as easily.

Dr Vallee's interest in this topic is testimony to this - he is a highly successful and intelligent man, who has no need in his life for a controversial topic such as this. However, there is a mystery here which needs solving, and he has devoted serious time to it. He would probably agree with you that the phenomenon is not ET craft (though you'd be even more shocked with the conclusions that the evidence is leading him to). This evidence (within the core cases) is comprised of strange, recurring manifestations - effects on electronics, physical effects on people such as conjunctivitis and heavy fatigue, and strange sounds/smells.

Whether it's simply hallucinations from temporal lobe stimulation (say, by some natural phenomenon which also effects electrical devices - EM radiation?), Government black-ops, or some other theory (including ET craft), we still don't know. But to dismiss the topic by referencing only the weak evidence doesn't add anything to the debate.

One of my favorite Jacques quotes:
"I will be disappointed if UFOs turn out to be nothing more than spaceships."

Take a look at this

My opinion, based in part on Vallee's groundbreaking work of the 1960s and '70s is that yes, there is no real proof (as we understand it) for the "reality" of UFOs, but that there is a huge backlog of circumstantial evidence that something non-human interacts with us from time to time.
