Obligatory cute animal video to close out the week

FSM knows this isn't new, but for some who stop by Boing Boing, it may be yet-unseen. Dramatic Lemur [actually Tarsier, but whatever, the Chipmunk upon which it's based was a hamster or something IIRC. ]

Oh and the dramatic "chipmunk" was a prairie dog on a Japanese kid's show about pets called Mini Moni.

WHOA. Only "cute" if you think scary monsters and incest are cute. Somebody get that thing before it gets me!

its more than appropriate its been named the wrong animal, since as noted the original dramatic chipmunk was actually a prairie dog.

I totally fell in love with tarsiers after I saw this (and looked it up pretty sure it was not a lemur). They are incredibly cool critters, really. The smallest primates alive.

Specifically, this is a Philippine tarsier. there are a few different species, some of which look fairly different. They're nocturnal, this one was probably alittle grumpy from being disrupted from its doze.

Here is an either adorable or terrifying picture of what I think is a different species of tarsier with its pupils fully dilated, eating its main food, a bug:

Here's another link with more media. Don't miss the video, you get to watch a dian's tarsier in action hunting bugs. Its totally fascinating! (its under select media).

On the same page make sure to check out the picture of the baby tarsier (should display as the first of the smaller pictures under the main one).

CUTE

Man #9, that video both intrigued and horrified me. It was like watching a Devil Ewok. Its weirdly bony hands especially creeped me out for some reason.

This is so, so, wonderful.

Maybe it's the electric pickle talking, but I'm reminded of a line from Altered States, spoken by a schizophrenic woman under study, and picked up by Ministry:

"I feel like my heart is being touched by Christ"

OK, maybe Chthulu in this case...

TarsierHX! If they used that video instead of the THX logo in the movie theater...well, people would probably run screaming for the door.

Just looking at the video is a mistake!!! That let it burn into my eyeballs and all the way to the back of my skull and suck my brain out thru the monitor. Now I can't close my bugged out sclerotics, like some some poor, forever Tex Avery critter. helllppp......mmmmeeee....kkjqwuh4bdvddfvpsdvkvjo

ALL HAIL HYPNO-TARSIER!

These guys are nocturnal.

It's an imperfect solution, those eyes. But evolution has to work with what it's got, and sometimes a better solution, like the reflective eyes of cats, just doesn't become available.

It's like the panda's "thumb", which is an inflexible bone spur. It's things like these that reveal the contingency-based nature of evolution, and that also reveal the unlikelihood of special creation.

Before the tarsier is fully awake, and its eyes are that half lucid content, that thing is totally cute and hilarious. But that hypno-tarsier stare is a strange one, it just seems like more eye than necessary. But again, I suppose illuminated peripheral vision in the dark is what that tarsier is all about.

I think the reason that the soundtrack swells like that is to drown out the voice of the Hypnotarsier as it commands our obedience...

Does anyone remember the "Gremlins" movie? Cute little buggers -- right up to the point where they eat your face. I think we have a new contender for the role. Yikes.

I had two thoughts by the end of this.

1) The THX music makes me think I should be seeing a movie next. Where is my feature film?

2) Mary Feldman got reincarnated! Yay, Marty!
