David Van Tieghem's Ear To The Ground

In 1982, performance art percussionist David Van Tieghem coaxed sounds out of New York City streets. The resulting film, directed by John Sanborn and Kit Fitzgerald and aptly titled "Ear To The Ground," is a masterpiece. You might also remember Van Tieghem's name from his collaborations with Laurie Anderson. Ear To The Ground (YouTube)

Okay, if you want to have your mind blown, try this: quick on the "Ear to the Ground" link, and then quickly middle-click on the David Byrne/Eno link below. (In Firefox, of course.)
The video will start playing, and in the background you will hear a track playing on the landing page of the Byrne/Eno site, at the same time as you hear the street percussionist playing new York City.
I won't spoil the effect for you, save to say that it is the most thrilling example of audiovisual synchronicity I've come across since Pink Floyd met the Wizard of Oz, and that David Byrne actually sings the word "sunset" as the sun sets over the streets of New York.
Wow. My mind hurts. I'm going to play that again.

Phone booths? Do they still have those in NYC?

@Joller. Oooh, that worked for me too!

The video of Tieghem playing at the Chelsea hotel is pretty good as well.

You might also remember Van Tieghem's name from his collaborations with Laurie Anderson.

Or from his work as a prolific and talented sound designer for theatre.

this video reminded me a bit of man man's session of the takeaway shows. it's available over here in full screen. it's from when man man "...coaxed sounds out of Paris's streets."

I remember seeing this on some PBS arts tv show in the early 80s and was enamored with it for many years afterward. Great seeing this old movie again. I was (am) a big fan of DvT's solo work and his collabs with LA. Great piece.

DVT's solo works are fabulous: These Things Happen, Safety In Numbers, Strange Cargo and a couple others. Wonder why he stopped recording after '91?

You can watch this in slightly better quality at the Exploratorium, it's been part of their listening exhibit for quite a while.

#7 that would be Alive From Off Center

Can't remember if the VanTieghem piece was when Laurie Anderson was hosting, or not, but I do remember seeing it.

AFOC blew the doors off my tiny little raised-in-South-Dakota world. Hain't been the same, since.

#10 - yeah, that was it!

Also, if you ever have the chance to see Laurie Anderson live, don't miss it. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Especially funny was the crowd, since it was at Davies Hall in SF and was part of a classical concert series (LA was the "outsider avant guard-ist" of the series) - they were all elderly "society" folks in furs and tuxes who would grunt and murmur their approval after each song.

Reminds me of STOMP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stomp_(dance_troupe) )

I love DVT's album These Things Happen, which was recorded a few years after this video.
