Flickr user agmilmoe posted a delightful photoset of "Anthropomorphic Cannibalism," or food so delicious that it eats itself. Seen above, "Two Fisted Cannibal." Anthropomorphic Cannibalism (Flickr, thanks John Alderman!)

Anthropomorphized food gives me the creeps. Never trust anything with a face that asks you to consume it.

...Didn't we have a BB piece a while back about a book where pigs go happily into the truck knowing and loving the fact that they were soon to be processed into sausages and pork chops? :-)

I've always wondered about Mr. Crab and his crabby patties on Sponge Bob. Does he grind up his relatives?

OM @2, I remember that too but I couldn't find it!

There are a couple episodes of TV Funhouse where the Anipals go into a restaurant called "Sames." Their tagline is "You Eat What You Are."

Drive through North Carolina long enough, and you'll run across more than a few pigs that can't wait to take a bite out of themselves.

Also, this reminds me of Cluckin Chicken: http://www.hulu.com/watch/2317/saturday-night-live-cluckin-chicken

RAJIO @6, thanks for the link! I updated the post with a reference to a previous BB post about that site.

For several years there have been at least three groups on Flickr devoted to food items eating themselves:
Happy Ham--http://www.flickr.com/groups/happy_ham/pool/
Scary beings Eating Themselves-http://www.flickr.com/groups/autophagy/pool/
Cut Me Wicked Servant--http://www.flickr.com/groups/cut-me-wicked-servant/pool/

Here's where some food eats some food-http://tinyurl.com/6f8uh2
and then other food eats the waste of the previous food, and makes other food- http://tinyurl.com/59zfeh. It gets complicated.

I always thought that the Famous Dave's logo, featuring a chef pig barbecuing a full rack of baby-back ribs, licking his chops, to be particularly disturbing. However, not disturbing enough to resist partaking in the occasional garbage-can-lid orgy of meaty BBQ goodness every now and again.

James Lileks (author of "The Gallery of Regrettable Food" and "Interior Desecrations," among other titles) refers to these as Quislings. And yeah, they always give me the creeps, too.

I blogged a few more modern examples specifically marketed at children last year: http://jeremiahlee.com/blog/2007/08/19/sitcom-in-my-cereal/

I posted a couple photos of these types of figures on my blog recently:

Thanks for the remind, Freshyill.

yeah, food mascots creep me out. Reminds me of the Foster Farms chickens.

I like the Weinerschnitzel hot dog that doesn't want to be eaten, or the Chick-fil-a cows that want people to eat chicken instead of them.

"or the Chick-fil-a cows that want people to eat chicken instead of them."

...Those billboard cows caused a bit of a ruckus a few years back. One of the local fraternities went around town and stole 8 or 9 of them, and set them up in the frat house back yard having an orgy :-)

As Tom Robbins wrote in "Another Roadside Attraction" never trust a pig who sells pork sandwiches.

Hi all, thanks for all the related links. I'll start adding my photos to some of the Flickr pools where they fit in.

I've been collecting these for a few years, they are relatively rare, but clearly there are others finding them odd, collecting and sharing them like I do.

I'll be adding a few more over the weekend.

Thanks!

Almost all Richard Scarry books feature at least one pig eating or selling some sort of pork product. Re-reading his books is one of the nicer aspects of parenting.

My fave example of this phenomenon is Pepe the King Prawn, who became the spokesprawn for Long John Silvers seafood restaurant.

A nice archive of the commercials is here:

The hot dog is not eating the two little ones, he's holding up his babies to entice you to eat them. Sheesh.
